Frequency‐domain optimal viscous damper placement using lower‐bound transfer function and multimodal adaptability

A new concept of a “lower-bound transfer function (LBTF)” and frequency-domain optimal damper design method are presented. LBTF expresses an ideal performance for response control in the frequency domain under constant sum added damping coefficients (or total cost dampers). The effectiveness each mode can be captured visually through plotting amplitudes model LBTF. An efficient generation LBTFs is also proposed. proposed provides designs with multimodal adaptability (effective multimodes). It does not require much computational load to implement since optimization conducted domain, first-order or second-order sensitivities objective derived analytically. fundamental placement compared shear-mass systems moment-resisting frames functions incremental dynamic analysis (IDA). demonstrated that effectively reduce floor acceleration responses elastic deformation responses. Moreover, it shown elastic–plastic although linear models.
